Whether it’s a denim jacket, romper, dress, or vest; April 28th 2011 is all about wearing denim for a purpose! This Thursday is “Denim Day in NJ”, Denim Day is a day (or weekend) of raising awareness about sexual violence prevention. In 1990 an 18 year old girl in Italy was picked up by her 45 year old driving instructor. Once her lesson began, she was forced to pull over and was sexually assaulted. On her arrival home, she told her parents who then pressed charges against her perpetrator. In a matter of days the case was dismissed as “the victim must have helped her attacker remove her jeans because they were ‘tight,’ thereby implying her consent” (Congressional Record, Steven Rothman). Within a few hours the women of the Italian Parliament began to protest and wore jeans to work. This day of awareness is recognized across the world in hopes of future cases such as the one stated above. Spreading awareness and a fashion trend, as our Ridgewood employees would say “who is better than you?”
